My Slacker High School Lifestyle

I decided to write about a bunch of stuff that happened a long time ago.  I have too much time on my hands.  But first, a super fast bball update: My confidence, playing time and performance have all slipped dramatically.  I do well in practice, but it is not translating to minutes or production.  The situation is deteriorating fast, but there are still a bunch of games left, so I have a chance to turn things around.  Lets hope it happens.  And now, on to the stories. No Love Lost for Cornell

In light of last nights game I feel like I need to talk about the Harvard-Cornell rivalry for a quick second.  So here is my bitter, crimson tainted rant:

Cornell has maintained a special place on my enemies list from the very first game I played against them.  It was up in Ithaca and we had just beat a solid Columbia team.  We were a veteran laden squad poised to challenge Penn for the league title.  It was a back and forth game the whole way.  Continue reading “No Love Lost for Cornell”

Dorm Stories: The Fruit Flies Make Their Play for Total Domination

I am not sure about the exact time frame for this incident, all I know is that it happened sometime during sophomore year.  That was the year that I lived in a 7 man split level suite with 6 people living downstairs and one in an upstairs bedroom.  The suite had an extra, windowless room situated in the middle of the 6 downstairs bedrooms.  At the beginning of the year one of the dominant topics of conversation amidst me and my roommates was what to do with this extra room.  There was talk of making it a video game haven or a comfortable reading area.  Unsurprisingly, what it ended up becoming was a mass storage/trash room.  And by “storage,” I mean throwing anything in there that happened to be in the way.  Eventually the trash disposal part of the room extended to the unused closets across the hall.  These closets became the dumping ground of choice out of some combination of convenience and maintaining a shred of decency by not wanting to put all our trash amidst our stored items. Harvard Dining Halls

Because everyone lives on campus and has a meal plan, a significant chunk of an undergrads life is spent in one of the many dining halls sprinkled around campus.  The meals become a time for relaxing, catching up with friends, and finding things to make fun of.

Every freshman generally eats at Annenberg, the cafeteria with the best location that only first years are allowed to use. It is the largest and most picturesque of all the dining halls.  Too bad it was also the noisiest, had the longest lines and served the worst food. If you came during peak lunch hours there would be a line wrapped around the building.  It advanced painfully slow, because the security to this place was like god damn Fort Knox.  The staff was absolutely petrified that an upperclassmen was trying to sneak in, as if it was every older students dream to relive their freshman glory, one bite of runny eggs at a time.  In contrast, if someone wanted to rob a dorm room, really all it takes is someone smart enough to slide their foot into the door of the building as someone exits. There is one old, tired guard handling dorm security. But, try and sneak into Annenberg, even just to get a glimpse of the decor, and 15 workers are sprinting at you like you breached the pentagon. The 4 Year War: Drew vs. Coach Fitz Part 2

Basically, all the factors mentioned in the previous post culminated in me and Coach Fitz having our first of 2 epic showdowns.  Before I get to that, there is the little matter of Stacie the trainer to discuss.  The story cannot be complete without understanding that after I would get my body beat up by the strength coach, I would seek solace in the training room in the form of massage, ice baths, etc.  But at one point sophomore year the pain in my knee got to where I had to go to the training room everyday to get electrical stim and ice on my knee.  Despite this, I was never able to get Stacie to stick up for me in my fight to be exempt from heavy squatting.  She was very friendly with Coach Fitz, and was not keen on disagreeing with any of his philosophies.  I am not an expert, all I know is that my knee hurt a lot, and it hurt even more when I did squats.  Stacie would spin all these BS yarns about how I needed to maintain the strength in my leg (like i couldn’t do that other ways) and how squatting wasn’t that bad.  I also found out the hard way that there is no such thing as athlete-trainer confidentiality.  Many things I thought I was saying only to Stacie mysteriously ended up being used against me by Coach Fitz. (Lesson: Just because someone occasionally acts nice and has a hint of a warm southern accent does not mean they will not stab you in the back.) The 4 Year War: Drew vs. Coach Fitz Part 1

Early Freshman year I was introduced to the person who would become the bain of my existence for the duration of my college basketball career.  His name was Coach Fitzgerald, and he had taken over the previous spring as head strength and conditioning coach.  To say he was a stocky 6’1 would not do the man justice.  He was more boulder than man, 250 pounds of barrel chested meathead.  He kept his hair short and his neck shorter. His posture was fit for a man who played high level college football and presumably spent the rest of his years perfecting the deep squat and hang clean. The first experience I ever had with him would prove to be a good foreshadowing of what our relationship would be like for the duration of my basketball career.
