1/4 Season Update

Things have been going well enough that I haven’t been compelled to write about something that was bothering me. Here are some things that have happened and things I have thought about since my last entry:
-ODWB gave me a clock as a holiday gift. I was grateful, but I am still suspicious. It seems like every night that I come back late there is some sort of work going on early the next morning. Once it was painting the hallway (which you wouldn’t think would be that loud, but he found a way to make it obnoxious and un-sleepthroughable) , once it was the roof. If he thinks I’m not on to him he is very wrong. Continue reading “1/4 Season Update”

Game/My Apartment

I have had a resurgence the past month and actually resemble a real basketball player at this point.  I have averaged 16 and 4 the past 3 games and we picked up 2 crucial wins.  The most recent game was especially fun because the crowd was really into it.  It was tight pretty much the whole way and featured a few memorable moments.  The first came in the 3rd quarter after we had finally built up a little momentum and seized a 2 point lead.  Then they came down and our big guy got called for a foul.  This guy is pretty much the Rasheed Wallace of the league.  He definitely has accumulated enough techs and pissed off enough refs to become a target for their calls.  As I have noted before the refs here are remarkably awful, but the disrespect our big man shows is still over the top. Harvard Dining Halls

Because everyone lives on campus and has a meal plan, a significant chunk of an undergrads life is spent in one of the many dining halls sprinkled around campus.  The meals become a time for relaxing, catching up with friends, and finding things to make fun of.

Every freshman generally eats at Annenberg, the cafeteria with the best location that only first years are allowed to use. It is the largest and most picturesque of all the dining halls.  Too bad it was also the noisiest, had the longest lines and served the worst food. If you came during peak lunch hours there would be a line wrapped around the building.  It advanced painfully slow, because the security to this place was like god damn Fort Knox.  The staff was absolutely petrified that an upperclassmen was trying to sneak in, as if it was every older students dream to relive their freshman glory, one bite of runny eggs at a time.  In contrast, if someone wanted to rob a dorm room, really all it takes is someone smart enough to slide their foot into the door of the building as someone exits. There is one old, tired guard handling dorm security. But, try and sneak into Annenberg, even just to get a glimpse of the decor, and 15 workers are sprinting at you like you breached the pentagon. How I Deal With Crippling Boredom

There are certain things you do when boredom overwhelms your spirit, you have already worked out and you’ve tried unsuccessfully to get some shots up because the gym was locked. (Quick aside. Even though I haven’t even started yet. Whatever, I wanted to tell this story and had no where else to fit it in. Sue me.  Also, I don’t know why I use parentheses in situations like this, but it just feels right.  Anyway, it was a Sunday before a Tuesday game and all I wanted to do was get some practice shots up.  I spoke with the manager the practice before, and he assured me that I would have a key waiting for me so I could actually access the gym, because the previous two times I tried to go it was locked.  So I show up, and as I am looking for the key I notice a little girl and woman probably around my age standing at the front door trying to get in.  Sensing something was up that could potentially disrupt my precious alone time in the gym, I found the key and snuck in through the side door.  Thinking I was so slick, I proceeded to start my workout. Army Trip and Blender Troubles

For the first time in 9 weeks, I participated in a practice. Despite the fact that my knee didn’t feel 100%, it was still such a relief to be able to run up and down a little.  My inner joy was clearly noticeable, because multiple people told me it was the first time they had seen me smile in months.

Today I was able to do even more, and my knee felt much better.  I cannot describe my happiness in being back on the court.  The last 2 months have been interesting and fun in certain ways, but for the most part being injured has made the whole experience pretty miserable.  I am looking forward to finally putting all that behind me, and the goal is to play in my first game next Tuesday. The Time I Stole A Car

In lieu of still being hurt and having nothing to say about basketball, here’s the story of how I finally got my own car:

First, a little background.  When I originally signed my contract I was under the impression that I would have my own car and my own apartment.  Apparently when a contract says “will make available an apartment and a car” it does not mean you will get your own apartment and your own car.  To the upper management, making available meant giving me an apartment and car to share, which is not the end of the world, but I have previously written plenty on why my specific roommate could potentially make this a living hell, which of course he did.
