No Love Lost for Cornell

In light of last nights game I feel like I need to talk about the Harvard-Cornell rivalry for a quick second.  So here is my bitter, crimson tainted rant:

Cornell has maintained a special place on my enemies list from the very first game I played against them.  It was up in Ithaca and we had just beat a solid Columbia team.  We were a veteran laden squad poised to challenge Penn for the league title.  It was a back and forth game the whole way.  Continue reading “No Love Lost for Cornell”

Almost Burned Down My Apartment

Last night I had a harrowing experience, but to figure out how it all started I have to go back a little bit.  As I am sure I have mentioned before, my room is cold.  Like wear a sweat shirt, pants, socks, sleep underneath 3 blankets, use a space heater and still feel like you are in an igloo cold.  (Come to think of it, maybe part of the reason behind my surge in weight was my body reacting in order to insulate itself.)  I knew that these temperatures would stay roughly the same at least through February, so while I was home I purchased an electric blanket.  I know I could have just waited until I got back and bought one here, but I am lazy and my mom was paying.  As I said last post, the blanket did not work.  I now think that the problem was I was not using my converter plug, I was only trying it with the basic European adapters.  I am not positive this was the problem, but I am pretty pissed I didn’t get to at least try to find out before disaster struck. My Night As A Bum

It all began around 10:30 at night, when I decided to get out of my apartment for some fresh air.  I had not left the apartment all day, and figured I would just go to the little park nearby for some stretching and maybe a few jumping exercises.  So I head downstairs, but just as I get to the bottom I realized there were trash bags in the kitchen that I wanted to throw in the dumpster.  I went back upstairs, got the trash, disposed of it outside, and headed over to the park.  I did some stretches, proceeded over to the grass to jump a little, then reached into my pocket to change the song on my ipod.  That is when everything fell apart. The 4 Year War: Drew vs. Coach Fitz Part 2

Basically, all the factors mentioned in the previous post culminated in me and Coach Fitz having our first of 2 epic showdowns.  Before I get to that, there is the little matter of Stacie the trainer to discuss.  The story cannot be complete without understanding that after I would get my body beat up by the strength coach, I would seek solace in the training room in the form of massage, ice baths, etc.  But at one point sophomore year the pain in my knee got to where I had to go to the training room everyday to get electrical stim and ice on my knee.  Despite this, I was never able to get Stacie to stick up for me in my fight to be exempt from heavy squatting.  She was very friendly with Coach Fitz, and was not keen on disagreeing with any of his philosophies.  I am not an expert, all I know is that my knee hurt a lot, and it hurt even more when I did squats.  Stacie would spin all these BS yarns about how I needed to maintain the strength in my leg (like i couldn’t do that other ways) and how squatting wasn’t that bad.  I also found out the hard way that there is no such thing as athlete-trainer confidentiality.  Many things I thought I was saying only to Stacie mysteriously ended up being used against me by Coach Fitz. (Lesson: Just because someone occasionally acts nice and has a hint of a warm southern accent does not mean they will not stab you in the back.) trip to the MRI

IMG_0729

Instead of being able to play in my first game I had to use the map seen above to get myself to the MRI center at Rambam Hospital.  It was drawn by one of the managers minutes before I left.  Armed with those not-quite mapquest worthy dircetions and zero hebrew skills, it was bound to be an adventure.  I asked before I left: “Well, if I get lost, I can call you right?” He gave a non-reassuring “Well, I will be at the game so I hope I hear my phone.” Fantastic.  Somehow, getting to the hospital itself was not that bad.  The one wrong turn I made was easily corrected.  But, the drive turned out to be the least of my troubles. Army Trip and Blender Troubles

For the first time in 9 weeks, I participated in a practice. Despite the fact that my knee didn’t feel 100%, it was still such a relief to be able to run up and down a little.  My inner joy was clearly noticeable, because multiple people told me it was the first time they had seen me smile in months.

Today I was able to do even more, and my knee felt much better.  I cannot describe my happiness in being back on the court.  The last 2 months have been interesting and fun in certain ways, but for the most part being injured has made the whole experience pretty miserable.  I am looking forward to finally putting all that behind me, and the goal is to play in my first game next Tuesday.
